Today in class we did the following:

□ 1. Vocabulary words 16 - 30

□ 2. RWN Pages 333 - 335

□ 3. Homework: Vocabulary words 16 – 30 x 4, defs x 1, 5 sentences using two vocabulary words.

Please note that we only finished half of RWN Page 335. We'll finish the rest of it tomorrow or Thursday.

  1. Cost him his life (phrase)- to cause someone to lose or destroy their life
  2. rouse (v.)- to wake someone up or make someone more active or excited
  3. lifebelt (n.)- a piece of equipment, usually a ring filled with air or light material that floats, designed to help you float if you fall into water
  4. swirl (v.)- to move quickly with a twisting, circular movement, or to make something do this
  5. panicking (adj.)-  of the nature of, caused by, or indicating a sudden overwhelming fear that produces hysterical behavior and that can spread quickly through a crowd
  6. officer (n.)- a person who has a position of authority in an organization
  7. crewman (n.)- a member of a group of people who work together, especially on a ship
  8. insist (v.)- to say firmly or demand forcefully, especially when others disagree with or oppose what you say
  9. refuse (v.)- to say that you will not do or accept something
  10. prevail (v.)- to get control or influence
  11. boiler (n.)- the part of a steam engine where water is heated to provide power
  12. upright (adj.)- straight up or vertical
  13. champagne (n.)- an expensive white or pink fizzy (= with bubbles) wine made in the Champagne area of Eastern France. Champagne is often drunk to celebrate something:
  14. porcelain (n.)- a hard but delicate, shiny, white substance made by heating a special type of clay to a high temperature, used to make cups, plates, decorations, etc.
  15. final resting place(phrase)- the location where a body is interred after death
