Today in class we did the following:

□ 1. Vocabulary words 16 - 30

□ 2. Homework: Vocabulary words 16 – 30 x 4, defs x 1, 5 sentences using 2 vocabulary words.

1. materialize (v.)- to appear suddenly
2. effortlessly (adv.)- in a way that is effortless (= seeming not to need any effort)
3. windlass (n.)- a machine that lifts heavy objects by turning a chain or rope around a tube-shaped device
4. maiden (adj.)- being the first of its type
5. voyage (n.)- a long journey, especially by ship
6. luxurious (adj.)- very comfortable and expensive
7. tragedy (n.)- a very sad event or situation, especially one involving death or suffering
8. iceberg (n.)- a very large mass of ice that floats in the sea
9. lifeboat (n.)- a small boat kept on a ship for people to leave in if the ship is not safe or might sink
10. pandemonium (n.)- a situation in which there is a lot of noise and confusion because people are excited, angry, or frightened
11. on board (adv )- on a ship, train, plane or other vehicle
12. foremast (n.)- the mast (= a tall pole that supports a sail) that is nearest the front of a ship
13. liner (n.)- a large ship for carrying passengers in great comfort on long journeys
14. bridge (n.)- the raised part of a ship on which the captain and other officers stand and from where they control the movement of the ship
15. lookout (n.)- a person who watches for danger
