Today in class we did the following:

□ 1. Vocabulary words 1 - 20

□ 2. Read The Hindenburg

□ 3. Homework: Vocabulary words 1 – 20 x 4, defs x 1, 5 sentences using two vocabulary words.

1.    cruise  v. – (of a motor vehicle or aircraft) travel smoothly at a moderate or economical speed

2.    explosion  n. – a violent shattering or blowing apart of something, as is caused by a bomb

3.    hydrogen  n. – highly flammable gas, the chemical element of atomic number 1

4.    drenching  v. – wet thoroughly; soak

5.    criticize  v. – indicate the faults of (someone or something) in a disapproving way

6.    era  n. – a system of chronology dating from a particular event

7.  grander  adj. – large and striking in size, scope, extent, or conception

8.  engine  n. – a machine for converting any of various forms of energy into mechanical force and motion

9. Zeppelin  n. – a rigid airship consisting of a cylindrical trussed and covered frame supported by internal gas cells

10. improvement  n. – When there's improvement, something is getting better

11. expository  adj. – intended to explain or describe something

12. origin  n. – the point or place where something begins

13. disastrous  adj. – causing great damage

14. dirigible  n. – capable of being steered, guided, or directed

15. mammoth  adj. – (very big) - huge

16. airship  n. – a power-driven aircraft that is kept buoyant by a body of gas (usually helium , formerly hydrogen) which is lighter than air

17. consist of  v. – to be formed or made up of (specified things or people)

18. structure  n. –  a building or other object constructed from several parts

19. advanced  adj. – far on or ahead in development or progress

20. dreamy  adj. – 1. having a magical or pleasantly unreal quality; dreamlike. 2. given to or indulging in daydreaming
